Joyce Grenfell’s witty monologues as a long-suffering nursery school teacher made her into an English comedy legend. Her brilliantly-observed, funny, bittersweet sketches and songs are performed by Loraine Metcalfe, a Little Theatre favourite who played Shirley in Shirley Valentine as part of last year’s summer repertory season. ‘Hazel, why did you put your finger in the keyhole?

A British comedian, singer, actress and monologist and, in her time, one of the country’s best loved entertainers, immortalised in roles such as the gym mistress Miss Gossage in The Happiest Days of Your Life and Ruby Gates in the St Trinian’s films. She achieved success as a writer and performer of songs and monologues at a time when it was unusual for a woman of her social background to work.
