Well, look no further… Sheringham Little Theatre is launching a Directing Course for Local Amateur Theatre Directors.

The course will entail bespoke sessions, tailored to meet individual needs. Exploring how to enhance your existing practice as an amateur director. There will be a mix of discussion-based sessions, practical sessions working with actors and sessions led by guest practitioners.

The course will focus on how to: create a vision for a production, work with scripts, support amateur actors, work with production elements: set, costumes, lighting and sound, approach different genres of text, work collaboratively with a team, support character development and work to a budget / with limited resources. There will be a mix of discussion-based sessions, practical sessions working with actors and sessions led by guest practitioners.

26th January – 10am-1pm
16th February – 10am-1pm
9th March – 10am-4pm
6th April – 10am-4pm
27th April – 10am-4pm

Cost: The course costs £120 – this includes 2 free tickets to see Abigail’s Party Directed by course leader, Katie Thompson.

How to get involved:

Due to the nature of the course, there will be a limited number of places. We are asking those interested to send in a short application about why they would like to take part in the sessions. We are asking applicants to have experience in directing 1 community production or more. However, if you are interested in directing, but you do not have previous experience, please do still apply. The application will consist of emailing over your: name, previous directing experience and a brief description of why would like to take part (no more than 250 words) to debbie@sheringhamlittletheatre.com – the deadline is 3rd January 2025.

Katie is an Artist in Residence with Complicité for their Mudlarks International Residency 2024. Katie recently graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a Masters in Directing. As part of this, Katie completed a month-long residency in directing at Shakespeare’s Globe.

  • The Turn of the Screw (Sheringham Little Theatre’s Summer Repertory Season)
  • Weeds (Norwich Theatre)
  • Season’s Greetings (Sheringham Little Theatre and St. George’s Theatre)
  • Cinderella (Diss Corn Hall)
  • Consent (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland)
  • Here is Home (Love Light Festival), and
  • Before it Rains (Stage@Leeds).

Assistant credits include: Bloodbank (A Play, a Pie and a Pint), The Summoning of Everyman (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland), Our Town (Sheringham Little Theatre). Katie produced Rewriting Rural Racism (Sheringham Little Theatre).
