Online launch for poignant film ‘born’ and shot at Sheringham
20th April 2020
A film screening aimed at boosting mental health charities is among the May events set to be rescheduled by Sheringham Little Theatre.
After The Sea was “born” and shot in the town, loosely based on the suicide of filmmakers Tom and Jamie Leatherbarrow’s close friend Sam.
Tom wrote and directed it, while his bother Jamie, a mental health support worker, produced it.
It has been shown at film festivals and used to spearhead mental health bereavement workshops at charities and prisons. The May 1 show was due to be its north Norfolk premiere, raising awareness and funds for mental health charities, and feature a question and answer session involving former MP Sir Norman Lamb who is a longstanding mental health campaigner.
A rescheduled date is still to be set, but an online release of the short film is also planned for May 3.
After The Sea explores the after effects and emotions that follow in the wake a suicide, through the meeting of a separated couple Alice and Joe who have lost a mutual best friend.
Tom, whose parents used to live in Sheringham, said: “After The Sea is not about Sam, nor is it about me, nor is it directly about suicide. It focuses on the aftermath and effect of suicide on those left behind and the cycle of grief it perpetuates.
“It’s about relationships and break ups and if nothing else, it is a heartbroken romantic’s love letter to love, fate and a man I still consider a brother, even if he won’t be around to see it.”
The idea for the film came to him while staying with his parents following a relationship break up and Sam’s suicide. It was stored in his smart phone notes for ages, and rekindled during an unsuccessful writing session involving an “awful crime drama” in Brighton. As soon as he started to pen the poignant story it just flowed.
The film was shot in May and July 2017 and released at the Raindance International Film Festival in Piccadilly Circus the following year.
Its Sheringham screening, once finalised, is also to thank the local businesses and families who supported the production said Tom, from south London, who used to work in the Cley nature reserve visitors centre café and still has friends in the area.
