A concert of reflective choral works on the theme of Remembrance.
Whilst in occupied France, Duruflé composed his Requiem during the Second World War and was still working on it in 1944 when the Vichy regime collapsed. He completed it in September 1947. At the time he was exploring Gregorian chants and uses numerous themes from the Gregorian Mass for the Dead.
Published in 1912 John Ireland’s anthem Greater Love uses words from various parts of the Bible and makes the firm assertion that 'love is strong as death; greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends'.
In 2012, and with the WWI centenary approaching, Laurence Caldecote wrote a new remembrance piece, dedicated to those from the British colonies who had fought for the Allies in many parts of the world. He set In Flanders Fields, as it was written by a Canadian serving in Europe.
