Comedy show puts self-help advice to the test

Can yoga and sex solve the problems of women over 40? A comedy show heading to Sheringham will seek to find the answer, with plenty of fun along the way.

Kath Ryan’s one woman interactive entertainment was inspired by a trio of 1960s Australian self-help books. Yoga and Sex…For Women (Over 40) sets out to delve into and debunk the questionable advice at the Little Theatre on Friday March 21. Kath, who has been a yoga teacher for 20 years, said: “The advice in the books was awful – sexist and ageist and included an insistence on readers buying a fresh fruit juice extractor. “The character I play initially thinks the books are incredible then begins to realise differently. “We take the mickey out of the books in some tightly-scripted chaos, as well as having some audience interaction.” The show has been staged in London, the Edinburgh Fringe and Prague Comedy Festival, and is now on a UK tour – with Sheringham as its only visit to Norfolk.

While audiences have included groups of women, Kath said it would also appeal to men who are “encouraged” to attend, adding “although it touches on the Kama Sutra it’s the kind of show you can take your mother to.” Kath was born in Hong Kong and has had a varied career as an actor, including Shakespeare, a TV weather girl, and a voiceover artist with roles ranging from sex toys to Princess Aerial in the Little Mermaid. She also runs a female three-part harmony group the Haywood Sisters.

Tickets for the show (7.30pm) are £15 here or call 01263 822347.
