Crossing the Line: A Powerful New Youth‑Led Drama Comes to Sheringham
St George’s Theatre is pleased to announce the upcoming premiere of Crossing the Line, a gripping new stage production adapted from Tia Fisher’s award-winning verse novel. This dynamic production have been developed with direct input from young people, to authentically reflect their experience.
Adapted for the stage by Helena McBurney and directed by Katie Thompson, Crossing the Line follows Erik, a teenager whose life is unravelling after the death of his father. As pressures mount at home and school, he becomes entangled with a dangerous network of county lines criminal activity — a journey that puts both himself and his family at risk.
Based on Tia Fisher’s acclaimed novel, which itself was inspired by a true story, Crossing the Line exposes the grooming tactics, manipulation and violence behind county lines operations — while ultimately celebrating courage and hope. The story shines a spotlight on the realities many vulnerable young people face today – and celebrates their resilience. One of the defining features of this production is it’s input from a Youth Cohort of 11-18 year olds, whose ideas, lived experiences and perspectives have shaped everything from script development and production choices to the marketing images used to promote the show.
Director Katie Thompson said: “The young people we are working with are incredibly open and honest when sharing their insights; they are passionate about telling Erik’s story, and how theatre can help to spotlight the issues affecting their lives. Their contributions will help us create a production that feels real, contemporary and relevant.”
