No holds Bard in am dram comedy

A washed-up American actor is tricked into playing King Lear at Stratford – then discovers the venue is not in the Bard’s birthplace but a namesake sleepy village in Suffolk.

Jefferson Steel’s arrogance and monstrous ego almost prevent him from submitting to the indignities of rehearsing Shakespeare in a barn, staying in a lowly B&B, or swapping his customary limousine for a borrowed mobility scooter.

But, with the help of his enthusiastic and dedicated co-actors, he slowly comes to rethink his pretensions and look at life in a whole new way.

The plot of A Bunch of Amateurs, co-written by Private Eye editor and Have I Got News for You team captain Ian Hislop, combines comic dialogue with punchy observation.

It is staged at the Little Theatre from February 22-25 by our friends from the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society, and sees experienced actor Kat Tindall making her directing debut.

CSODs return to our theatre in October with Blithe Spirit, sandwiching visits between staging the musical Evita at Cromer Pier in May.
