Scene is set for summer season comedy opener

To laugh or not to laugh …. that is the question. Our summer season opens this Saturday (July 29) with a comedy that becomes a spoof thriller – all based on a famous play by the Bard.

I Am Hamlet centres on a theatre director putting a young actor through his paces as he auditions for the lead role in Shakespeare’s tragedy – in a cocktail of comic moments and surprising plot twists.

The director is played by film and TV actor Steve Speirs, who has been seen in Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean and Ricky Gervais’s Extras and After Life. He is pictured rehearsing with young actor Lewes Roberts.

Steve will also do a Q&A session and solo comedy spot to round off the show, which runs from July 29 to August and which promises to be a cracking opening to our summer season.

Our other summer dramas are:

  • August 8-12 – Shanty – premiere of a comedy with music set in a seaside fishing family
  • August 15-19 – Hound of the Baskervilles – comedy spoof of the Sherlock Holmes moors murder mystery
  • August 22-26 – Run For Your Man – UK premiere of a new twist on Ray Cooney’s classic farce Run For Your Wife
  • August 29 – September 2 – Private Lives – the timeless wit of Noel Coward as a divorced couple find themselves in adjoining hotel rooms
