Seaside premiere Shanty has pots of music and fun
Meet Shanty and her seaside-dwelling family who are turning to music to help them through the choppy waters of heartbreak and hard times.
They are at the centre of a brand new comedy, Shanty, which makes its premiere as the second in our series of summer dramas.
As the family tackles personal crises eldest daughter Shanty brings them together to form a band – and the fun begins.
Director Marcus Romer said: “It’s a new contemporary sea shanty about living in Norfolk.
“The story looks at the family’s journey when they all discover something about themselves, including a coming of age, and coming out, as well as growing stronger together.”
Little Theatre regulars will recognise the three-strong cast who have appeared in previous productions in the town. Dad Brendan is played by Tim Welton from Bury St Edmunds who is a former summer season star, including in Abigail’s Party. Meg Artherton, from Taverham and Amy
English, from Sloley, who portray his daughters Shanty and Marina, appeared in Ghosted and Our Town.
Marcus, who directed both, added: “It is privilege to be back at Sheringham to direct a play written about North Norfolk and using East Anglian actors.”
Although their journey is sparked by a bereavement and business troubles the story is laced with the impish comedy of local playwright James McDermott, who is now on the EastEnders scriptwriter team. It also has live traditional music and newly-composed songs.
Shanty runs from August 8-12 (7.30pm plus a 2.30pm matinee on the 10th). For more information and tickets click here or call the box office on 01263 822347.
