Tenor Trouble Farce Opens Sheringham Summer Drama Season

A big opera event turns into farce as soaring arias are swapped for spinning mayhem in the opening show of Sheringham Little Theatre’s summer season.

Lend Me A Tenor is set in 1934 as an opera company prepares to welcome famous singer Tito “Il Stupendo” Merelli to star in a production of Pagliacci.

But, as trouble befalls the leading man, efforts to ensure “the show must go on” are riddled with crazy characters, mistaken identity and pacy plot twists in the classic comedy opening the professional repertory season on July 29.

At the heart of the action is agent Harry Saunders (Donald Forbes) who is caught in the eye of the storm whirling around him, and his nervous young assistant Max (Jonathan Iceton) whose hidden musical talent saves the day.

North Norfolk actor Harry Wyatt, who plays Tito, said: “I am loving learning an Italian accent and portraying a really larger-than-life character. And I am looking forward to using my singing skills within the silliness of this brilliant farce.”

Other characters caught in the web of frantic disguises and romantic entanglements include an ambitious diva, a flirtatious opera guild chairwoman, a giddy girlfriend, and a meddling bellhop.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: “We like to open our summer season with a bang, and this fast-paced comedy certainly fits the bill, using the superb singing and acting talents we have in our cast this year.”

The show runs at Sheringham from July 29-Aug 1, Aug 12-15, Aug 28-29 – as well as at Wolterton Hall on August 7.

Other shows in the Sheringham summer season are:

· Little Shop of Horrors – cult comedy horror rock musical featuring a killer plant in a run- down flower shop – (Aug 5-6, 8. 10-11. 24-25)

· Night Must Fall – psychological thriller involving murder and manipulation in the home of a wealthy old woman – (Aug 19-21, 26-27)

· On the Edge – premiere of the winner of SLT’s inaugural playwriting competition, a gentle comedy set in a clifftop home – (Sept 2-5)
